Art & Architecture

Aanbidding Der Wijzen

In addition to a visit to the museum of Royal Manufacturers De Wit Royal Manufacturers of Tapestry, where valuable tapestries from all over the world are restored by hand, art lovers should pay a visit to the Hof van Busleyden Museum. Not only is the building a beautiful example of late Gothic style, but inside are highlights of the city's artisanal crafts, including some stunning pieces of tooled gold leather (for which Mechelen is famous), intricate lace work and a large collection of art by the city's best-known artist Rik Wouters. Of course, the work of much older and more famous artists, such as Rubens and Van Dyck, can be found in the city's many churches.

It is impossible to miss the city's stunning architecture, which is to be found wherever you wander. Start with the truncated St. Rumbold's Tower, which is easily recognizable and dominates the city. The original design called for a 77-metre spire, but only 7 metres of it were ever actually built, hence the unusual shape. Of the original carillon's set of 49 bells, which are still in working order, each has its own name, such as Salvator, which weighs 8884 kilograms, and Liberation, which was the newest addition in 1947. Thirty-nine steps above this carillon, there is a second set on which concerts are played during the summer months. The total weight of both these carillons is over 80 tonnes and there are 98 bells in all.
