Walking

There are hundreds of well signposted walking routes in Flanders - all offer unique vistas and attractions along the way. Maps to these routes are available in the local tourist offices or via their websites.

Starting Gently
The flat coastal area with its agricultural hinterland dotted with picturesque little villages and crisscrossed by canals and rivers is ideal for the gentle walker, with refreshment and sustenance in cosy cafes and great restaurants never far away!

Or try an invigorating walk on the beach, stretching from the Westhoek coastal reserve in De Panne to the Zwin Nature Reserve in Knokke, soaking up sun and wind while taking in the beautiful scenery. www.flemishcoast.co.uk

More Strenuous
Should you fancy a more challenging walk, head for the Flemish Ardennes with their undulating hills and beautiful countryside or discover the Green Belt around Brussels, not only dotted with elegant castles and parks, but a few breweries too (always makes for an interesting stop)!

The old Scheldt basin is also a very tempting walking area and renowned for its great food, so ideal to combine exercise with gastronomic delights! Haspengouw, the orchard of Flanders, is a sight to behold in spring while the heather in the Kampenhoutse Heide is alluring in autumn.

If you are really keen on exercising, why not partake in the International Blankenberge Two-Days Walk of Flanders: www.2daagse.be or the Dodentocht (Dead Walk - 100 km) in Bornem: www.dodentocht.be
