Oude Markt 13, 3000 Leuven. Tel: 0032 (0)16 32 40 10
The Catholic university is world famous. It was founded in 1425 and soon became one of the most distinguished universities in Europe. The great humanist Erasmus of Rotterdam taught here, the geographer Gerhard Mercator studied here and one of its chancellors was elected Pope Adrian VI in 1459. Today 24,000 students are educated at the university to soak up knowledge as amusingly demonstrated by the statue on the fountain "Fons Sapientiae", known as "Fonske", in the Grote Markt.
