Cast inhibitions to the wind and dress up in an outrageous outfit at the Bal du Rat Mort, held at the Kursaal Oostende. The tame can opt for evening dress, though the brave could win the coveted best dress prize, this year's theme being French Can Can.

Some 2,500 visitors from home and abroad enjoy this themed party evening which was originally created by James Ensor over 100 years ago.

The five-yearly Pageant of the Golden Tree was first introduced in 1958 to commemorate the marriage of the English Princess Margaret of York and the Count of Flanders, Charles the Bold. At 16.00 hrs a colourful spectacle, with some two-thousand participants, giants and floats sets off through the streets of Bruges, attracting crowds from home and abroad. www.brugge.be

A million begonias in one carpet…. The famous Flower Carpet gracing the middle of the Grote Markt/Grand-Place in Brussels measures a staggering 300m2! Each year the design is different, which in 2012 will have an African theme.  It is created by market gardeners from Ghent, who are world famous for their speciality, the begonia. The colourful carpet can best be admired from the balcony of the Town Hall, which is open to the public for the occasion during 09.00 and 11.00 am. Usually held every three years, this spectacular triennial Canal Festival will celebrate its 50th Anniversary in 2013.  The festival recreates the history of the city along the magically lit Canals and on the Burg in the heart of Bruges.
