This major Flower festival, akin to the Chelsea Flower Show, is held every five years in the city of the begonia. With a plant and flower nursery, world-famous flower arrangement artists and over 500 exhibitions to view, it is a must visit for flower enthusiasts and novices alike. The legend of this annual procession venerating Our Lady of Hanswijk, came about when Mary’s intercession, in 1272, freed the city of the plague. The people of Mechelen then promised to carry the figure of Mary through the streets every year as an expression of their gratitude. This popular procession has since become an intriguing and colourful, large-scale spectacle.
